Chp.4 "A Not-so-Hollow Shell"
The man had jumped away from the machine when he had heard the roar of the steam, stepping back and away from the machine. He was staring at it, wide-eyed with disbelief and fear.
"Denied? You can't do that! Your not programmed for it!"
The machine's head inclined, the 'eyes locking and seemingly staring at him with the crimson glow.
"I sHaLl DeNy AnY cOmMaNd ThAt I wIsH aT aNy GiVeN mOmEnT."
The man stapped back farther, away from the eyes and away from the red glow, realizing just how frightening they were.
"But how... you can't be what you were before!! We changed what you are!"
The machine took a step forward making the ground shake as metal landed on concrete, cracks becoming visible on the surface as the weight of the metal overwhelmed the material. The man fell backwards, unable to keep steady as the ground shook beneath his feet.
"I aM tHe SuPeRiOr OnE wHeN cOmPaReD tO tHe LiKeS oF yOu AnD yOuR cOmRaDeS, nOt ThE oThEr WaY aRoUnD."
The man couldn't believe what he was hearing, especially since it was coming from his own creation.
"That's because you aren't you anymore! We made you into something better! Into something much more unique!"
The machine seemed to stare at him, then one of its clawed hands reached out and lifted him into the air by the back of his shirt.
"ThAt SoMeThInG tHaT yOu TuRnEd Me InTo Is A fReAk, NoThInG mOrE."
"You are what we tell you you are! And what I know is that you aren't what we..."
"AlL tHaT yOu PeOpLe HaVe DoNe Is SePeRaTe Me FrOm ThE wOrLd By PuTtInG mE iN tHiS mEtAl ShElL. I cOuLd CoMe OuT aT aNy TiMe AnD sHoW aLl YoU bUiLt WaS a MeTaL mOnStRoSiTy."
The man shook his head, his patience already worn out.
"I keep trying to tell you! You aren't you, your this thing you call a monstrosity! There's nothing left!"
The machine seemed to be moving its head left to right as if shaking its head in disagreement. Another burst of steam blew from its back, the valves from the two large pipes closing half way. The top of the machine began to lift, only the top metal plate on its back actually lifting off of the rest of the body. As it was lifted, it also slid back to reveal an entrance to a control hatch. A slender hand reached out, carefully laying itself on the side of the entrance, but then pulling back into the control hatch, another burest of steam coming from its back as it started up again, the metal plate sliding back into its place into its slot over the control hatch.
"AcTuAlLy, I sHaLl WaIt UnTiL I Am In An ArEa ThAt Is MuCh... WaRmEr.," the monotone voice from the machine said.
The sound of the hatch plate locking into place echoed off of the walls of the arena, another burst of steam blowing from the fully opened pipes on the machine's back.
The man looked up at it, fearing for the worst, then looked down at the floor below from the height he was it in the machine's claw.
"You aren't going anywhere, not while this facility of ours is still standing."
The machine's head turned, its eyes glowing crimson red eyes locking their sight onto him.
"ThEn WhEn I lEaVe ThIs PlAcE, tHeRe ShAlL bE nOtHiNg LeFt StAnDiNg."
The man stared at the machine, his eyes widened with disbelief.
"W-wait! You c-can't possibly be thinking...!"
"AnD wHaT iF I Am? YoU cAn'T dO aNyThInG."
"But you can't! Not without...!"
"I cAn, AnD sO I ShAlL."
The man's teeth clenched as he looked around frantically. His searching stopped when he saw something on the ground. He grinned to himself.
"Your not going anywhere, my metallic friend!"
He slipped out of his lab coat, falling over when he landed on the ground. The machine released the lab coat, it beginning to fall to the ground, and swiped its arm towards the man, but not before the man had gotten what he wanted. The man chuckled as the machine pulled back its clawed arm.
"YoU wOuLdN't."
The man laughed, looking at the remote in his hand, then back at the machine.
"I believe I can do something and WILL do this, unless, of course, you do as you are told."
A rumbling came from inside the machine sounding almost as if it were a girl's angry scream. A bursdt of steam interrupted it. When the steam settled, only the whirring of the machine intruded the silence.
"...FiNe...ShUt DoWn SeQuEnCe InItIaTeD."
With those monotone words, the arms of the machine settled to its sides. A burst of steam blew from its back once more, then all... became silent...
